What role does ATS play in diesel generator sets?

When using a diesel generator, if the diesel generator is not equipped with an ATS, the emergency backup power supply system is incomplete. The ATS automatic transfer switch monitors the power supply and automatically switches from the main power supply to the backup diesel generator, and vice versa. This is a basic operation that can ensure your facility receives a continuous power supply and that no damage is caused during the load’s transition from one power source to another.
I. How does ATS work
If there is no properly operating ATS, switching your load from one power source to another may cause many difficulties. If two power sources are connected simultaneously, it may cause the circuit and the machine to overload. The process of connecting two power sources may also generate reverse feedbacks between them, which could cause destructive surges through grid power lines and backup diesel generators. ATS manages the power flow to protect the electrical system and maintain continuous power supply, whether the power comes from the grid lines or backup diesel generators.
ATS continuously monitors the power supply and senses when the grid power is intermittent, insufficient or completely offline. When a shortage is detected, it will automatically turn on the backup power supply and then transfer the power load of your facility when the backup diesel generator is ready. After the switch, the ATS will continue to monitor the power supply of the grid lines. When it detects that the grid power supply is available and stable again, it will transfer your power load to the main power supply again and shut down the backup diesel generator. All of this occurred without any human intervention, which means that everyone can continue normal business operations without interruption.
Of course, a manual transfer switch can also achieve the purpose of switching power supply, but it does not monitor the power supply and switch automatically; instead, it requires manual operation. It should be noted that for some industries where personal safety is of vital importance, ATS is generally required to be part of the standby diesel generator system.
II. What types of ATS are available
The main way to classify the ATS system and determine the one that suits you is to identify your power requirements. Most ATS systems will be marked with their ampere-capacity. This means that if you make modifications to the backup power supply capacity and requirements, you must also update your ATS to ensure that it can handle the conversion of load size correctly.
Different ATS products will have different functions beyond their basic uses. Some ATS systems can also control which basic systems are powered by the backup power supply to increase the operating time of the backup diesel generator. Some offer remote monitoring, while others record power events so that you can collect data on power transmission and generator performance.
